FIVARS VR Festival Preview at Camp Wavelength, Toronto, Canada

FIVARS logo - Festival of International Virtual and Augmented Reality Stories

The Festival of International Virtual and Augmented Reality Stories (“FIVARS”) will be hosting a free preview of curated VR content at the Camp Wavelength music festival on Toronto island, on Saturday August 29th 2015.

This is the first year of Camp Wavelength – a 3-day festival (August 28th-30th) offering overnight camping and performances by Do Make Say Think, Blonde Elvis, Wooden Sky and Holy F$#!, among others.

On the second day, we will be featuring a special presentation of “MansLaughter” from Cinemersia in Texas – the ‘world’s first virtual reality feature film’, alongside other curated virtual reality, stereoscopic 3D story experiences from around the world including “LoVR” by Immersive, Inc. from the UK, “Snow Globe” by Transportive.Technology and “Teleportaled” by PAVR from California.

The showcase will be presented by Toronto’s virtual reality organizers VRTO and VBAReality – the same people who brought you VAR07.15 – the largest Virtual and Augmented Reality showcase in Ontario. It is in anticipation of a larger showcase they are mounting in Toronto in mid-September – the official FIVARS show.

“We chose the name FIVARS carefully” says VRTO founder Keram Malicki-Sanchez. “We wanted to move away from the idea of ‘Film’ Festival because virtual reality is a nascent platform for new modes of storytelling that break from traditional cinematic convention.”

“We appreciate the opportunity to preview our festival at the inaugural Camp Wavelength – which in itself represents a forward-thinking artistic mindset.”

“FIVARS is about building a cultural awareness around this new leading edge technology,” says VBAReality founder Joseph Ellsworth “While at times we may choose to still enjoy a window view through a cinema, or television screen, we now have the potential of entering into the experience and being at the heart of the story.”

Free demos will be available at Camp Wavelength on August 29th, starting when the gates open at 12pm until 6pm. (Admission included with Festival ticket.)

VAR 07.15 – Toronto’s Biggest VR Showcase – The Complete Exhibitor Guide

VAR Facebook Cover Photo

In association with Ryerson University’s DME (Digital Media Experience) and LaunchZone initiatives, VAR is a collaboration between the organizers of four separate Meetup groups: David Zhang (Vangard/ARTO), Joseph Ellsworth (VBAReality) and Keram Malicki-Sanchez (VRTO/Editor-in-Chief, IndieGameReviewer.com).

VAR – which is an acronym for Virtual + Augmented Reality and also the short form for the word “variable” used in programming to represent a mutable value – brings together over 16 exhibitors, some showing more than one type of product or demo that is pushing the new bounds of virtual and augmented reality technology.

“Toronto has always been a hotbed for the intersection of technology and the arts,” Malicki-Sanchez says, “Even 20 years ago, when I saw Jaron Lanier talk about virtual reality at UofT and then play a live VR concert at the Glenn Gould theater the next night, I was inspired, and it still hasn’t worn off two decades later. There are so many world class filmmakers, indie game developers, technologists and forward thinkers here that, with the new consumer market-driven boom in VR development, I was motivated to base my Meetup group in my native city.”

Here is an overview of all the amazing tech and demos at VAR 07.15 – the largest Virtual, Augmented and Blended reality showcase of its kind in Toronto taking place Thursday, July 9th 2015 at Ryerson’s hyper-modern Student Learning Centre, 341 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada from 6:30 to 9:30pm.
